New England Ecotourism Society

The New England Ecotourism Society was formed to stimulate and foster the development of ecoguiding and outdoor environmental experiences in the New England region. Principal among its interests is the Waterfall Way Track Network, which brings together both new and existing tracks into a co-ordinated network of walking opportunities between Walcha and the northern NSW Coastline. As part of its charter to foster regional development through nature-based experiences, NEES wishes to develop and co-ordinate a range of outdoor product that enhances and diversifies the walking track experience. An example of such product is a vehicle-based tour from Armidale to Point Lookout (New England National Park) currently being developed by members and friends of NEES, and the three day walk from Styx River State Forest Headquarters to Point Lookout.

In 2003 NEES had a feasibility commissioned to look at the track network. This study identified the benefits and outcomes of the development on the economic, social, environmental and cultural development of the region. This study highlighted the significant gains that could come the the regions communities through the development of a track network.

The next stage of the development of the track is the establishment of a track management organisation that will oversee the sustainable operation of the tracks and ecotourism in the New England.

NEES has also sponsored the setup of a bushwalking club in the New England to allow all the people who have shown interest in the development of the track, the ability to start walking on the track.

Other parties we would like to acknowledge as part of the development of the track and that have shown and given support are:

• The aboriginal people of the area - traditional owners of the land
• Department of Transport and Regional Services for funding for the development of the track
• The Local councils in the region including Armidale Dumaresq, Walcha, Bellingen and Coffs Harbour
• Land holders and business owners in the area who have contributed their time and input into the development of sections of the track as well as the feasibility study
• The friends of the track who have been members of NEES or have just give their support in a variety of ways.
